What is Deep Life (and why is that the title of my book)?

Hint: it's pretty much in the title 😉

My book is titled Deep Life, here is what that means.

Most people struggle to control their attention. Many turn to apps, tricks and hacks (placing the phone in another room, a social media timer etc) for a quick fix and externally remove distractions away from their life. But, none of these solve the problem, they just mask it. The only solution involves cultivating peace, being less distractable in the first place. By attending to something, and practicing the skill of attention, you will get better at this. You will be able to just be, environmental cues wouldn’t be able to affect you on the same way. This is what living a ‘Deep Life’ means and why it’s so important that I’m writing on it and live my life by it.

Below, you will find this week’s video from my Youtube channel, some quotes and visuals you might like to share, and a transcript of the video. Deep life
One of the most common problems nowadays that people report, is controlling their attention and removing themselves from distractions. There are all sorts of apps and devices and tricks and hacks that people use to try to take distractions away from their life. And that, that is the environmental way of solving some of the problem of distraction culture that people have now will hyper distraction or whatever you want to call it.
But, there is an alternative solution, which is to make yourself less distractable in the first place , to the point that many of the environmental cues don’t affect you in the same way. And the way to do that is to practice attending on something. So if you practice the skill of attention over time, you get better at attending to things and it becomes easier instead of your attention span being three to six seconds or whatever, the latest study show now. It can easily be expanded to minutes or hours, or even days people can attend and focus for incredibly prolonged periods of time, if they practice and that doesn’t mean focused concentration in the work sense. What I mean by that is sitting and being, and being at peace.
One of the input related causes and effects of hyper destruction culture is a constant sense about anxiety, a constant sense of activation in people nowadays. And one of the reasons for that as far as notifications and distractions are caused is it takes 20 or 30 minutes for your brain to reset, after it does one thing. So if you were being distracted every 10 or 20 minutes, your brain never really has time to reset and to enter into what’s called a parasympathetic nervous system state enter into the resting state.
And it’s in the resting state that all of your emotional regulation activities within your brain happen , as well as much of your physical regulation, actually, when, when your parasympathetic nervous system is dominant, your body is able to heal and grow and look after itself in a way that isn’t the case when your sympathetic nervous system is dominant. So being constantly distracted and being the type of person who is constantly distractible, is amplified and amplifies this whole problem with anxiety and mental health that we have nowadays. So one of the things about learning to attend and learning to focus your attention is you’re helping your brain to fix itself.
You’re helping your brain to sit in this parasympathetic state, where you are not as amenable to being distracted. You don’t find it as easy to be distracted, and you don’t feel the buzz of a notification as a buzz. It’s a good thing. You might see it as a distraction, but you don’t think about it. You can, you can clear it.
And you can realize that you don’t need them turned on in the first place.
Deep Life
What I mean by deep life is being able to attend to the world that’s around you at the present moment. It kind of encompasses the things like presence that other people talk about, but it’s applied across your whole life, not at particular moments. And it’s almost contrasted with the idea of deep work that you expend all of your mental energy in your working time by focusing incredibly intently and use the rest of your life to improve your work.
That’s not the way round that I’m writing for and not the way around that I live my life. I focus on getting the most out of each moment in life on seeing the awe and the wonder in the everyday that’s around me on spending time with my family and my kids. While they’re young, I hear they’re only young once. And on using my attention to enjoy and make the most of life.
As it presented to me, which also means I have time to engage in things around me and make the mental space to engage in things around me to help other people too. So we’ve put our lives on hold before to help people that we’ve just met because they needed help and they had nobody else around them. And we’re able to do that because of the way that we live as a family, we’re able to pause and explore and enjoy ourselves or pause and help people and accomplish things.
Depending on what we want to do. And the knock on impact of that is that my work productivity has never been higher, but my focus has been on living a better life for me and for those around me, in my immediate circle.
there’s plenty of advice out there for how to increase your work productivity. And what I want to do is provide some advice for how to improve your life directly without the goal of improving your work productivity. That’s an accidental side benefit, and it really should be seen as an accidental side benefit.
(What is the aspirational self)
the aspirational self that I write for is a set of qualities that I kind of want to embody myself in future and also that I think the world lacks at the moment, the Western world’s lacks at the moment, and most media and education focuses on training other things, primarily anything that’s useful for productivity and anything that’s useful in, in the economic sense. So what I’m trying to do here is, help people who want to go on a different path in their life who wants to take a different direction.
And that’s partly because that’s what I want to do. And it’s partly because I think that underserved in the traditional education and media. So I want to share some of the stuff that I’m doing with my clients, some of the stuff that I’m doing myself and, help people who want to shape themselves into this kind of person, but the principles apply to whoever you want to be.

So the idea that if you want your brain to develop in a certain direction, you need to attend in a certain way fits whoever you want to be. It’s about understanding how to link your attention to your aspirational self.
